DR1 breaks for the New Year holidays

DR1 News is taking time off for the extended New Year holidays. Headline news from Friday, 27 December 2024 through Thursday, 2 January 2025, will be compiled for the 2 January news digest, the first in 2025.

The Dominican tradition is for family and friends to gather on the evening of the 31st to enjoy a menu that is similar to that of the 24th of December with suckling pig the highlight.

A large number of Dominicans travel to visit family and friends in the interior or have booked stayed at resorts or in accommodations in vacation destinations.

The government has removed restrictions for entertainment venues to stay open and sell alcohol. People on the road are advised to be especially on the defensive.

The first day of the year is a major holiday in the cities that become havens of peace. On New Year’s Day most businesses are closed in the cities. For instance, Ikea announces it will be closed on 1 January. Most mega businesses that are usually open on holidays will also close on that day.
