Six dead in traffic accidents during Christmas holiday, COE Reports

The National Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported eight fatalities in traffic accidents over the extended weekend, including six during the Christmas holiday. 63 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide over the past 24 hours, as part of the “Awareness for Life, Christmas, and New Year 2024 Operation”, COE director Juan Manuel Méndez García said. Of the 63 accidents, 48 involved motorcycles, six were light vehicle collisions, four were pedestrian hit-and-runs, and one each involved a bus and a jeep.

Hospitals across the country attended to 585 individuals, of whom 335 were treated for incidents related to the holiday operation. Among these, 73 people suffered from alcohol poisoning, including 11 minors aged 10 to 17. Additionally, 35 individuals were treated for food poisoning.

The provinces of Puerto Plata, San Cristóbal, the National District, Santo Domingo, La Vega, and San Pedro de Macorís reported the highest number of cases, indicating these areas had the most significant holiday activity.

The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) supervised 195 traffic light intersections and carried out 15 traffic optimizations in Greater Santo Domingo to ensure smooth traffic flow.

The Military and Police Commission of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications reported 683 road assistance calls, including rescues, tire changes, fuel provision, towing, and mechanical assistance. Furthermore, 55 road failures were resolved in Greater Santo Domingo.

The Civil Defense reported 12 assistance calls, while the Specialized Corps for Fuel Control monitored the five main toll plazas in Santo Domingo, including 10 fuel and merchandise transport units.
