City government in tender phase for Malecon improvements

Santo Domingo’s waterfront is set to undergo a major transformation as the National District City Hall has opened bids for the fifth phase of the Malecón Deportivo project, Listin Diario reports. This ambitious undertaking aims to revitalize a 1.7-kilometer western stretch of the Malecon (Av. George Washington Avenue), extending from Av. Núñez de Cáceres to Calle Gaviota in the Miramar neighborhood.

The project, estimated to cost RD$350 million, is slated for completion within a year. It will feature a wide range of improvements, including enhanced public lighting, new sidewalks and bike lanes, and various recreational facilities such as basketball and volleyball courts. A dog park, children’s playground, and expanded parking areas will also be added to cater to the needs of the community.

Mayor Carolina Mejía had announced the project in February 2024 as an extension of the Paseo del Malecón project completed in December 2023. The overarching goal is to create a vibrant public space that can be enjoyed by families, young people, seniors, and residents of all ages.
