According to a report from the Customs Agency (DGA), more than 300,000 Dominican travelers took advantage of the traditional “holiday grace” offered by the agency. Traditionally, the Customs Agency has allowed returning Dominicans to bring duty-free gifts for family and friends. The Customs Agency increased the limit of duty-free items from US$3,000 to US$5,000 worth of goods for the 2024-25 season.
As reported, at the Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, over 310,000 returning Dominicans had taken advantage of this opportunity during the pre-Christmas period, and several thousands more were expected to do the same before the grace period ends on 15 January 2025.
Some conditions apply. First of all, the US$5,000 limit is based on the FOB prices; second, the goods must not be for commercial use, for example, they cannot be US$5,000 worth of TVs or name-brand clothes for re-sale. The traveler must have been out of the country for at least six months for the duty-free privilege to apply.
