Greenhouses produce huge numbers of fruits and veggies

A lot of people do not realize that much of the fruits, flowers and vegetables sold in the nation’s supermarkets, markets, and colmados are produced right here in the Dominican Republic under controlled conditions.

Not so long ago, items such as bell peppers, arugula, lettuce varieties, and spinach were scarcely available, and today they are commonplace in local establishments.

The reason, as Minister of Agriculture Limber Cruz Lopez recently announced can be found in the nearly 20% increase in the number of meters of land dedicated to the production of fruits and vegetables during the first Abinader administration.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 8.9 million m2 were cultivated under greenhouse conditions in 2020, and by the end of 2024, there were 10.5 million m2 under cultivation.

Production rose from 12.2 million pounds of produce to over 22 million pounds of such items as bell peppers, all types of tomatoes, eggplants, and, of course, lettuce.

Delicate products such as strawberries and flowers are also produced under these controlled conditions.

Minister Cruz Lopez also emphasized the importance of the government’s policy to support the agricultural sector.
