Senate approves changes to contracts for ball players

The Senate of the Dominican Republic approved changes in the law that provides the framework for contracting young baseball prospects to play in the Dominican Summer League and participate in the different baseball academies that are maintained by Major League Baseball (MLB) in the country.

Previously approved by the Chamber of Deputies, the legislation requires payment of bonus money, to be agreed upon by both parties and which shall be paid upon signing the contract.

The changes allow for the MLB teams to exchange or trade players without their consent and require the player to maintain the best physical condition possible.

The idea behind this legislation is to provide procedures and controls according to the requirements under the Dominican Constitution.
