Universities have serious questions on proposed fusion of ministries; should Infotep be included in the merge?

The Dominican Association of University Rectors (ADRU) has raised important questions regarding the current legislative process that seeks to merge the ministries of Education (Minerd) and Higher Education, Science and Technology (Mescyt) into a single entity. The university leaders claim that the proposal will limit the autonomy of the nation’s universities since the legislation includes articles concerning the management of the universities and institutional policies along with other things that would limit each university’s autonomy as an academic institution.

The rectors also say that the legislation does not seem to recognize the distinctions between these institutions of higher learning. While voicing their understanding of the reasoning behind the legislation, the nation’s top educators also point out that in line with the government’s new stand, vocational schools such as Infotep (the Technical-Professional Institute) should be included in the proposed legislation, along with other similar entities.
