Capital city baseball fans are enjoying the playoffs that are finally taking place exclusively at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Ball Park in Santo Domingo. The last time the two city teams are competed in the finals was in the 2015-16 championship, then won by the Escogido.
Those who bought a ticket to the opening game of the Dominican Winter Professional Baseball Championship on Monday, 20 January 2025, didn’t know what they were in for. It took the Tigres del Licey 14 innings to put an end to that first playoffs game, winning 4-3 against the Leones del Escogido. Reports now are that the game was among the longest in the Dominican Baseball League’s history. Indeed, El Dia writes that the seventh game of the 1980-81 championship series between the Águilas Cibaeñas and Leones del Escogido had extended to 15 innings. Similarly, the fourth game of the 1995-96 season between the Estrellas Orientales and Águilas Cibaeñas also required 15 innings to decide a winner.
On Tuesday, 21 January, the Escogido Lions would make a quick comeback and win the second game, 3-2, tying the playoffs.
The playoffs are a best-of-seven series to decide the champion and the team that will represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series set to open in Mexicali, Mexico on 31 January 2025.
