Too many lawmakers do not seem to take their jobs seriously

Lawmakers skip sessions without facing consequences, reports Diario Libre. The absenteeism in Congress, especially in the Chamber of Deputies is high.

The Chamber of Deputies held 41 sessions from 16 August 2024 to 9 January 2025, during which several lawmakers had high levels of absenteeism yet did not face any apparent consequences for their unjustified absences or frequent excuses, reports the newspaper. Only 14% of the deputies had perfect attendance. 44 of 178 deputies attended 34 or less sessions of the 41 that were scheduled.

Diario Libre said that 62 of the 178 deputies were even absent from the inaugural day of their session in August 2024. The newspaper shares a list of the roll call for the past session.

Congress is on break now, with the lawmaking session reopening on 27 February 2025.
