
It seems to be a never-ending tale. An open, home-built craft, filled with Dominicans, Haitians, and oftentimes, other nationalities, nearly swamped on the high seas. However, this time, they were lucky, as units from the Dominican Navy and Dominican Air Force were able to rescue 24 persons who were attempting the dangerous trip to Puerto Rico.
It should be noted that the United States Coast Guard, Border Patrol, and ICE had returned more than 70 Dominicans a week ago, evidence of the risky decision made by those who see a bonanza is to be made in Puerto Rico. Over the years, hundreds of persons have perished, some most gruesomely either starving on Mona Island or drowning in the open sea.
The Dominican authorities have pleaded with people to emigrate via the legal road, but every year, sleazy entrepreneurs build the boats, and people make the attempt to reach Puerto Rico.
