Dominican Republic wins best stand at Fitur

The Dominican Republic won the best stand for second consecutive year in the Madrid-based Fitur travel fair, the leading Spanish tourism promotion event. At Fitur, the country went all out presenting its strengths and opportunities as the leading Caribbean tourism destination.

Top brass of the three leading banks – the Reservas, Popular and BHD traveled to Madrid for the Fitur travel fair. The banks were there to help fund and collaborate with the many investors interested in doing business in the Dominican Republic.

Scores of media from the leading radio, Internet, TV and printed press were invited to cover the event with Fitur becoming the lead story as the event unfolded from 22 to 26 January 2025.

The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean leader to follow. The DR is No. 2 in tourist visitations in Latin America and the Caribbean after Mexico. In 2024 the country set a new record in 11 million tourist arrivals and expects 2025 to be another record in tourist arrivals and investments.

Tourism Minister David Collado said deals for US$2.5 billion were signed. He said airlines committed to an additional 120 frequencies.

The Ministry of Tourism took advantage of the global fair platform to announce it will be focusing on promoting the destinations of Santiago city, Miches in El Seibo province on the eastern coast, Cabo Rojo in the southwestern province of Pedernales and Bergantin Beach in Puerto Plata on the north.

Puerto Rico seeks to become sort of a side destination working with the Dominican Republic. New Governor Jennifer Gonzalez wants to plug into the many air connections the country has with Europe to fill their hotels. Tourism Minister David Collado met with Gonzalez to discuss a future tourism campaign and joint packages.

While only a half-an-hour flight brings the two countries together, the present prohibitive cost of the flight (because of taxes and tariffs) makes the deal difficult. But the new governor feels they could attract more European travelers offering joint packages. The Dominican Republic is already popular with Puerto Rican travelers, who likewise could travel here to vacation and also take advantage of multiple air connections to Europe and Latin America.
