With more inter-regional differences coming to the surface with the change in the US administration, there is doubt whether US President Donald Trump and other heads of government will attend the 10th Summit of the Americas set for Punta Cana in November 2025. During his past term, US President Donald Trump canceled his trip to the 8th Summit of the Americas that was held in Lima, Peru in 2019.
The Summit of the Americas has traditionally been by invitation from the United States government and is held every three years. The last summit to take place was the 9th Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, United States of America from 8-10 June 2022 with the attendance of former US President Joe Biden.
The Dominican Republic was chosen to host the event under the past Biden administration. The event is the only formal gathering of all the region’s leaders that integrates Canada and the United States. Latin American heads of government have met regularly over the years as part of the Iberoamerican Summit that includes the heads of state of Spain and Portugal.
During Trump’s past administration, after previously committing to attend the 8th Summit of the Americas that would take place in Lima, on 10 April then President, Trump announced he would cancel his trip and would instead send his Vice President, Michael Pence, to represent the US at the 19 April Summit of the Americas in 2019.
As explained in Global Americans, in the past, the United States has used the Summit to advance its diplomatic goals (such as the proposed Free Trade Agreement of the Americas during the William Clinton and second George Bush administrations) and hemispheric democratic norms and demonstrate its willingness to cooperate with its Western Hemisphere priorities—as President Barack Obama did during his much-publicized meeting with Raúl Castro at the 2015 Summit.
The Summit of the Americas was first convened in 1994 in Miami, Florida, under the Bill Clinton administration and has remained a platform for US leadership in the Western Hemisphere.
