The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (Intec) has announced that its ResAgro-Sargazo project, focused on managing sargassum seaweed and agricultural waste, will be showcased at the One-Ocean Science Congress 2025 in France this June 2025.
Intec is one of the local universities that is working on finding solutions to the sargassum seaweed impacting Dominican coasts and beaches.
Funded by the French Embassy in the Dominican Republic and implemented by Intec, ResAgro-Sargazo is making strides in its objectives, according to the project’s second steering committee meeting held at Intec. The meeting saw representatives from France, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic in attendance.
The One-Ocean congress serves as a prelude to the third United Nations Oceans Conference (UNOC3), co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, taking place in Nice, France from 9-3 June 2025.
Brigitte Veyne, Cooperation and Cultural Action Counselor at the French Embassy in the Dominican Republic, expressed her satisfaction with the project’s progress in key areas. She highlighted the expansion of the Franco-Dominican network focused on the utilization of sargassum and agricultural waste. Veyne also noted the project’s ripple effect, citing the Franco-Dominican collaboration on Sargcoop2, a Caribbean sargassum management cooperation program managed by the Region of Guadeloupe and funded by the European Union, among other research initiatives.
