Regional work for DNCD, new CBP agent to work as DR liaison with US

President Luis Abinader said that the president of the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) Vice Admiral José M. Cabrera Ulloa would be stepping up to collaborate with regional combatting of drug trafficking in the Americas. Abinader mentioned the symbolic term of czar in describing the enhanced efforts from the Dominican collaboration to fight organized crime in the region.

The president of the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), Vice Admiral José M. Cabrera Ulloa, in December 2024 had already met with Rear Admiral Jo-Ann F. Burdian, director of the United States Southern Joint Interagency Task Force (JIATF-S), to discuss the continued strengthening of joint operations against drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.

That meeting between the DNCD head and Rear Admiral Burdian is described as one that underscores the Dominican Republic’s commitment to international cooperation and joint coordination in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and related crimes.

During the meeting in December 2024, Vice Admiral Cabrera Ulloa expressed gratitude for the support of the Joint Interagency Task Force and reaffirmed the Dominican government’s dedication to dismantling criminal organizations.

The JIATF-S plays a key role in detecting and combating drug trafficking in international waters and has been a critical ally to the Dominican Republic in ensuring regional stability and security.

Likewise, on occasion of the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 5-6 February 2025, President Luis Abinader confirmed the country has agreed to accept a Customs and Border Patrol agent who would serve as a liaison, a person who will be working together and alongside the National Police to coordinate information, especially on drug trafficking.

He explained that the CBP person will be working together and alongside the National Police Command and the importance is that there will be more resources to be able to coordinate all the information we have. For example, a fast boat approaching, which we see coming from another country, any kind of suspicion we have that a shipment may contain drugs, and someone who is physically there with them to pass on that information and help coordinate efforts to prevent those drugs, which in many cases may be destined for the United States, so it can be stopped and confiscated.
