Homicide rate drops to 7.7 per 100,000 inhabitants; Progress attributed to Joint Task Force efforts

Interior and Police Minister Faride Raful had the satisfaction to announce a record low in the homicide rate to 7.7 per 100,000 residents during the weekly press conference on Monday, 10 February 2025. This is down from the previous record low of 8.4 last month.

During a press conference following the 78th meeting on the Citizen Security Plan, led by President Luis Abinader, Minister of Interior and Police, Faride Raful, reported that six regions have had no homicide victims from 1 January to 10 February 2025.

Raful emphasized the efforts of law enforcement in reducing deaths from gender-based violence and social conflicts.

Regarding noise pollution, the Minister announced that interventions will continue under the “Operation Peace Guarantee” program to enforce Law 90-19, which aims to prevent and limit noise pollution.

She reminded the public that certain areas allow higher noise levels, but these zones must be monitored to ensure they do not disturb local residents. The National Police and Ministry of Interior will maintain their oversight in this area. She also reaffirmed the police’s ongoing commitment to preserving peace and security.

Raful urged all sectors to support programs like “Open and Active Schools,” which aim to steer youth away from idleness and reduce conflicts with the law, positioning the country as a model of safety and governance in the region.

“This is a society striving for order, with citizens who are conscious, responsible, and aware of their duties, rights, and constitutional guarantees. To achieve this, we must continue education and work together with the media,” she stressed.

The Minister also noted that dialogue efforts, including cooperation with churches and neighborhood associations, would continue to achieve even better results.

Speaking during the La Semanal press conference on 10 Feberuary 2025, President Luis Abinader proudly spoke of how crime in the DR is dropping at a time when it is on the rise in the region. He mentioned Costa Rica where crime has surged to 16 per 100,000 inhabitants.
