10% of hospital emergencies at public hospitals are to Haitians

According to the National Health Service (SNS), public hospitals gave free medical services to 93,579 patients of Haitian origin who sought services at the emergency wards. This compares to 937,014 Dominican patients, thus Haitians were 10% of the total. Most of the Haitian patients were women arriving to give birth. In most cases, the Haitians receive free services. Poor Dominicans regularly pay a fee for the services to cover basic costs even when they have government insurance.

The breakdown of Haitians requesting services at public hospitals in 2024 (as of 16 December 2024) was:

Engombe Municipal Hospital, located in the Santo Domingo West municipality of the Santo Domingo province, that treated 60,685 emergencies — 19,340 (31.8%) Haitians and 41,345 Dominicans (68.2%).

San Lorenzo Maternity in Los Mina, in eastern Santo Domingo, with 46,073 emergencies — 13,431 Haitians (29%) and 32,642 Dominicans (71%).

Dr. Antonio Musa Regional Hospital, in San Pedro de Macorís, with 58,044 emergencies — 12,908 Haitians (22%) and 45,121 (88%) Dominicans.

El Almirante Hospital in eastern Santo Domingo with patients with 41,376 emergencies — 12,194 Haitians (29.5%) attended and 29,182 Dominicans (70.5%).

Villa Hermosa Municipal Hospital, in La Romana, with 39,513 patients attended in emergencies 12,013 Haitians and 27,490 Dominicans.

The Nuestra Señora de Regla Hospital, in Peravia, with 52,408 emergencies — 10,988 patients from Haiti and 41,405 Dominican patients in 2024.

Verón Municipal Hospital with 22,901 emergencies – 8,981 Haitians (29.3%) and 13,920 Dominicans (60.7%)

Ricardo Limardo University Teaching Hospital, in Puerto Plata, with 58,495 emergencies — 7,455 from Haiti (12.7%) and 51,040 Dominican patients (87.3%).

Julia Santana Municipal Hospital, located in the Tamayo municipality, in Bahoruco, there were 24,930 emergency — 7,308 Haitians (29.3%) and 17,622 Dominicans (70.7%).

The Pedro María Santana Municipal Hospital, in San José de los Llanos, San Pedro de Macorís, with 14,663 emergencies and 7,069 Haitians (48.2%) and 7,594 Dominicans (51.8%).
