DR to play Canada in final qualifying FIBA window

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) AmeriCup 2025 Qualifiers’ third and final window is happening this February 2025.

The Dominican Republic is scheduled to compete against Canada and Nicaragua in the final qualifying window for the FIBA AmeriCup 2025. The DR is competing in Group C that also gathers Canada, Nicaragua, Mexico.

As the country gears up for the event, the team’s renowned Argentine coach Néstor “Che” García and Dominican coaches David Díaz and Abraham Disla, as well as Spanish coach Sergio Jiménez, have convened top players like David Jones, L.J. Figueroa, and Joel Soriano to join the players that live in the DR. Several other prominent Dominican players based in Europe, including Andrés Féliz, Jean Montero, and Tyson Pérez, are expected to join the team after completing their commitments in the Copa del Rey.

The 2025 FIBA AmeriCup qualification is a basketball competition that is being played from February 2023 to February 2025, to determine the eleven FIBA Americas nations who will join the automatically qualified host Nicaragua at the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup.

The games are scheduled for 21 and 24 February 2025. In Santo Domingo, the games will be played at the Volleyball Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center at 8pm on 21 February (vs Canada) and 9pm on 24 February (vs Nicaragua).

In Group C, Canada has won their four games, Mexico and the DR are tied to two wins and two losses and Nicaragua has lost all its games. Nicaragua is automatically qualified as it will host the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup, leaving only two slots that will be decided this February 2025. The DR into the tournament leads Mexico in points 157-150.

24 February
Mexico vs Canada in San Luis Potosi, Mexico
DR vs Nicaragua in Santo Domingo

Eight different cities will host this third window’s games, in which the 12 qualified countries for the continental tournament, which will take place in August, will be known. The competition is divided in four groups.

So far, only Brazil and Uruguay have secured their place in the FIBA AmeriCup 2025, along with host Nicaragua. Nine spots are still available. The competing teams are Argentina, Bahamas, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.
