The director of the Migration Agency, Vice Admiral Luis Rafael Lee Ballester says that exceptions cannot be made for construction workers to the law that establishes the rules for applying for Dominican residence and work permits.
Asociacion Dominicana de Constructores y Promotores de Viviendas (Acoprovi), the association that groups constructors, wants flexible deals to regularize their workers, estimated at 87,000. Most of these seeking to regularize their status are Haitians who have not secured paperwork in Haiti to regularize their status in the Dominican Republic under Migration Law 285-04.
Migration director Lee Ballester insists that any solution coming from the talks with the builders has to comply with the Migration Law.
