National Salary Committee to reconvene next week when employers did not present their proposal

The National Salary Committee will hold its third meeting this year on Monday, 24 February 2025 to discuss a minimum wage increase for the non-sectorized private sector.

The meeting, which took place behind closed doors today, brought together union representatives, employers, and government officials. The lack of a concrete proposal from employers regarding the salary adjustment led to the scheduling of Monday’s meeting.

Earlier in the day, Gabriel del Río, representative of the Autonomous Classist Trade Union Confederation (CASC), stated that they expect the employers’ proposal to include an increase of no less than 20%.

“We will never accept less than 20%, out of respect for the President,” del Río emphasized. President Abinader had suggested the 20% increase during a press conference.

Before the meeting, Rafael (Pepe) Abreu, president of the National Confederation of Trade Union Unity (CNUS), expressed his skepticism about the outcome.

Abreu stated that expectations are low, particularly regarding the employers’ positions.

“If we speak honestly, we should not expect anything auspicious from the employers. To believe is to see, to see is to believe, because these gentlemen are still thinking of new postponements, claiming that time has not allowed them to consider a proposal,” the union leader affirmed.

The manufacturers of the Association of Herrera had been expected to present a proposal for the business sector, but this did not happen.
