The highly anticipated Animal City project awaits presidential approval to get underway.
The lands most appropriate for the project are located on terrain owned by the near-defunct State Sugar Council (CEA) which once ran 12 sugar mills that were owned by dictator Rafael Trujillo.
The judicial council for the State Sugar Council reported that the presidential permit is all that is needed for the project to get underway.
Luis Abinader has been a supporter of the project, called City of the Animals or City of Angels, ever since September 2024 when he called the project “noble” and assured reporters that he would look at the proposal. The President was also the first signature of the Pact for Animals that was signed in the offices of the Listin Diario newspaper at the behest of the Dominican Federation for Animal Rights (FEDDA).
