Minister of the Environment Paino Henriquez has announced that his ministry has issued fines totaling RD$500 million during the first six months of his tenure. Of this amount, some RD$90 million has been paid. The fines issued to corporations as well as individuals, have ranged from RD$25,000 to RD$12 million.
Nearly 2,300 people have been arrested for crimes committed under the laws covering the environment. Of this number only 523 were Haitian nationals.
During the same interview, the minister also revealed that his ministry has issued some four thousand permits for different projects that successfully completed the requirements for environmental impact studies and other paperwork required.
