Career prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso was chosen by President Luis Abinader with the unanimous backing of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM). She cannot be removed for two years, and her term can be extended for another two years.
Reynoso has climbed the prosecutor ladder, being prosecutor of Santiago (2009-2011) and then the National District Attorney (2011-2018). When she was named National District attorney in 2011, she was the youngest ever, either man or woman.
She had aspired to be a judge of the Supreme Court of Justice, but instead became the chief crime prosecutor (2020-24).
On Friday, 21 February 2025, she was named Attorney General of the Republic through the new National Council of the Magistracy protocol. The protocol called for the President to name the candidate and the members of the CNM to vote in favor or against. The members of the CNM are: the President of the Dominican Republic, the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, the presiding Supreme Court judge, the presiding Constitutional Court judge, a Supreme Court judge, a senator and a deputy of different political parties.
This time the President’s candidate for Attorney General received the unanimous vote of the CNM.
The Puerto Plata-born prosecutor replaces Miriam German Brito who retires after serving as Attorney General (2020-Feb 2025) and presiding judge of the Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice.
The announcement of Yeni Berenice Reynoso ends months of speculation and weeks of interviews.
Among her many duties as Attorney General, Reynoso is expected to provide guidance on the governmental policies for the prevention and control of crime. She will be working with other institutions of the state.
In addition, she will have to be sure that the lower echelons of the Justice Department are complying with the policies created by the Superior Council of the Justice Department. Also, among her duties will be to head investigations as the representative of the people, direct different cases through the courts, and protect victims of criminal actions. She has done all this before at lower levels, and now she is at the highest level.
