US Democrat representative Adriano Espaillat announced by X that the Washington Heights area of Manhattan has been officially registered as Dominican Historic District. The area is being included in the National Register of Historic Places. Espaillat celebrated the recognition highlighting it ensures the Dominican legacy in Washington Heights is preserved for future generations.
This designation opens doors to new funding for preservation efforts, promotes heritage tourism, and acknowledges the Dominican community’s contributions to American history. “This is our moment—our history is now part of the nation’s history. Long live Dominican culture!” Espaillat concluded.
Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the US. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his fifth term in Congress.
