TUI Care Foundation announced it is backing mangrove conservation in Samana province. The TUI Forest Dominican Republic project expands upon a previous successful venture. The latest phase seeks to further restore vital mangrove habitats in the northeastern peninsula.
TUI Care Foundation highlights that mangroves are among the most essential yet undervalued ecosystems in the world, providing unparalleled ecological and economic benefits. These coastal forests act as natural barriers against storm surges, reduce the impact of coastal erosion, and sequester significant amounts of carbon—far surpassing the capacity of traditional rainforests.
TUI Forest Dominican Republic initiates this new phase to reach a total of 3.6 million mangrove trees planted in the vicinity of Sanchez on the south side of the peninsula of Samana.
Understanding their critical role in sustaining both the environment and local economies, and TUI Care Foundation is backing locals who want to preserve the important natural resource. TUI Care Foundation is collaborating with the Centro para la Conservación y Eco-Desarrollo de la Bahía de Samaná y su Entorno (CEBSE) and the Global Nature Fund (GNF). The project seeks to rejuvenate an additional 100 hectares of mangrove forests, planting 400,000 trees in the process. This endeavor follows earlier achievements that saw over 100 hectares of mangroves restored and 3.2 million trees planted near Sanchez.
The Centro para la Conservación y Eco-Desarrollo de la Bahía de Samaná y su Entorno (CEBSE) is a Dominican non-profit that has mostly worked with the conservation of the whales and the environmental resources of Samana peninsula and bay, Los Haitises National Park, and the coastal plains of Sabana de la Mar and Miches. It encompasses the provinces of Samaná, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, María Trinidad Sánchez, and the Bajo Yuna region.
Global Nature Fund, established in 1998, is a project partner. The Germany-based private non-profit foundation works around the globe to protect the environment.
