
According to the just released Obesity Atlas 2025, 68% of the Dominican population has high BMI (overweight) and 32% is obese. The number of overweight adults is expected to be 5.78 million in the next five years.
The Obesity Atlas highlights that what is happening in the Dominican Republic follows global trends. Around the world, overweight and obesity will affect nearly 3 billion adults (some 50% of the world’s adult population) by 2030. There are also concerning rises in the number of adults with obesity who will likely need medical intervention in their lifetime, with serious implications for health systems.
