Costa Rica, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic have officially declared their support for Surinamese Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin in his bid to succeed Luis Almagro as Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS).
This endorsement, as stated in a joint press release by the three nations, underscores their dedication to regional unity, the reinforcement of multilateralism, and the strengthening of democratic institutions throughout the Americas, particularly during a period marked by instability and challenges to development.
The backing from Costa Rica, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic follows similar expressions of support from Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay, which were announced on Tuesday.
The election for the new OAS Secretary General is scheduled for March 10th. Ramdin is one of two candidates vying for the position, with Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano also in the running.
