Former President Danilo Medina defends his past government actions

In what is described as his first interview with media after eight years, former President Danilo Medina responded to questions from the El Sol de la Mañana panel. Medina was President for the terms 2008-2012 and 2012-2016. He said he was unable to change the Constitution because his political party, the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) was divided. Eventually, former President Leonel Fernandez (1996-2000, 2004-2008, 2008-2012) split from the party to found the People’s Force accusing Medina of rigging the primary.

Medina took advantage of the morning talk show to defend the actions of his government. He blamed the Procurement Agency for allowing any irregularities of which his brother Alex Medina and sister Magalys are accused of, as well as his brother-in-law Max Montilla. He said that the accusations to his family members are political and just because of their ties to him. “We left high standards of government and to annul the PLD they have to destroy us,” he said.

Medina has retained the presidency of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).

The interview coincides with the naming of a new Attorney General, Yeni Berenice Reynoso.
