Lidom wants a new stadium for DR, Has announced Caribbean Series will be played in Miami

The president of the Dominican Baseball League (Lidom) Vitelio Mejía says that until there is a baseball stadium with capacity for 25,000, the Caribbean Series will not be hosted in the Dominican Republic when it is the country’s turn in 2028. The Quisqueya Ball Park has capacity for 14,469 seated persons. The Cibao Stadium in Santiago has capacity for 18,077.

The Lidom approved that the Caribbean Series that would have been played in Santo Domingo will be played at the LoanDepot Park of Miami. That stadium has capacity for 37,442. That stadium is the third smallest of MLB sanctioned ball parks in the United States. The profitability of the show is what is most important for the league.

The Roberto Clemente ball park in San Juan, Puerto Rico has capacity for 12,500 spectators.

The last time the Caribbean Series was held in Santo Domingo was in 2022. To prepare for that event, the Abinader administration invested upwards of RD$129 million. Current president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, engineer Garibaldi Bautista was responsible for the remodelling. This included the reconstruction of the visitor team clubhouses, the field rain coverings, the new LED lighting system, remodeling of the Office of the Baseball Commissioer and the presidential box. At the time, the renovations were carried out to obtain a MLB certification for the celebration of visitor games by MLB teams. The Quisqueya ball park hosted two MLB 2024 preseason games between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays in March 2024.

The Estadio Nido de Angeles in Mexicali, Mexico, where the Caribbean Series was held in 2024, has capacity for 20,000.

The city of Miami is home to large populations of expats from the countries participating in the Caribbean Series, and the events held there have been more profitable than those held in the home countries.

The Caribbean League has approved the next Caribbean Series to be played in 2026 in Caracas, Venezuela; 2027 in Hermosillo, Mexico; 2028 in Miami, Florida; and 2029 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
