More on the shutdown of land border to Dominican goods

Very recent decisions announced by the current government in Haiti received headlines that were alarming for many Dominican merchants. Diario Libre reports that the announcement that Haiti would no longer receive shipments of goods from overseas by way of the Dominican/Haitian frontier was not aimed at Dominican products, but rather, at shipments from overseas that were off-loaded in Dominican ports for trans-shipment across the border.

Diario Libre sources revealed that the idea behind this decree is the intention to force ships carrying goods to Haiti to dock at Haitian ports. This was seen as a measure to close off the supply of contraband arms and munitions that is currently reaching the outlaw gangs that control a large part of the neighboring country. The flow of merchandise at the various bi-national markets is not expected to be affected by this measure.
