The Hydrobots team from Profesora Felicia Javier Suárez Public High School in Samaná has won their First Lego League 2025 national finals, securing the coveted Champion’s Award. Their victory marks a significant achievement for public education in the Dominican Republic, as they outperformed over 60 teams from both public and private schools nationwide. This is the first time a public high school wins the competition.
The competition, a showcase of innovation and technical skill, recognized 12 teams across various categories, including robot performance, innovation project and core values. However, it was the Hydrobots’ exceptional performance in robotics and innovation that earned them the top prize.
“This win sets a precedent for future generations of public school students,” stated a press release from the event organizers.
The First Lego League, backed by the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (Minerd) and organized by the Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology (Fundecitec), highlights the nation’s commitment to fostering STEM education.
Ancell Scheker, Vice Minister of Technical and Pedagogical Services at Minerd, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in developing students’ technological skills.
“Minerd is committed to supporting events like these, as they align with our goal of providing quality, equitable, inclusive, and innovative education,” Scheker said during the awards ceremony.
Wilson Mateo, Director of the Department of Educational Informatics, praised the dedication of teachers, mentors, and regional teams in nurturing students’ growth in the field of robotics.
Both Scheker and Mateo were recognized by Fundecitec for their contributions to educational robotics in the pre-university sector.
Abraham Dauhajre, founder of Fundecitec, lauded the talent and creativity displayed by the students, particularly those from public schools.
“Initiatives like these are crucial for the future development of our country,” Dauhajre stated.
The event concluded with a musical performance by the Madre Asunción Nicole Educational Center from Monte Plata.
The win by the Samana pubic high school victory underscores the potential of public education in the Dominican Republic and the importance of investing in STEM programs to empower the next generation of innovators.
