Foreign Minister calls for migration protestors to demand expanding peace-seeking mission in Haiti

Haiti is the top priority of the Ministry of Foreign Relations of the Dominican Republic, Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Alvarez said during an interview with El Despertador, on Channel 9 on 2 April 2025.

Responding to demands by many for the country to step up actions to stop Haitian migration, Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez called for Dominican migration protestors to demand actions from the UN, when interviewed for El Despertador. He understands acting to resolve the chaos in Haiti is essential to slow down the migration pace from that country that has escalated as the gangs continue to control the capital city.

The Foreign Minister urged the Antigua Orden Dominicana (AOD) and other concerned individuals who have organized protests to press their claims in front of the United Nations office and pressure international organizations to support the multinational support peace-seeking mission in Haiti. The plan was to send 2,500 soldiers and only 1,020 men have been sent. This does not allow for the retaking of key areas in Port-au-Prince now under gang control.

Alvarez explained in the case of Haiti, the UN authorized the creation and deployment of a hybrid force, as occurred previously for Somalia. Yet, he said the mission has not received the needed international support because it is not of sufficient interest with the other ongoing international conflicts.

The main problem is that the turmoil in Haiti is minimized at a time when the United States is disrupting international politics. He said the United States does not have an ambassador in the United Nations.

“Perhaps I went a bit too far. But peacefully, obviously peacefully, I also call on the United Nations to act in a determined manner, as well as the countries involved—those that influence the Haitian situation, countries at the international level—to make a decisive move to support the multinational mission that assists the Haitian police. These, for example, would be excellent measures, dedicating their efforts in that direction,” he continued as he recommended protestors change their strategy.

The Antigua Orden Dominicana is an informal organization whose members don quasi-military attire to protest for more actions on behalf of the government against illegal migration. The most recent protest took place in Hoyo de Friusa in the Punta Cana area and ended when the protestors sought to entre Matamosquito, the Haitian community where they had not been authorized to go.
