President Abinader to lead forum on motorcycle safety

President Luis Abinader will lead the “Responsible Motorcycle Use Forum” on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Relations Convention Center. The forum will bring together government officials, business leaders, and transporter associations to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to motorcycle safety, Listin Diario reports.

The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) is organizing the forum as part of the development of the 2025-2030 National Road Safety Plan. The event aims to identify the main needs of the motorcycle sector, share best practices, and consolidate a commitment to reduce traffic accidents involving motorcycles.

According to data from the Traffic Safety and Land Transportation Agency (Digesett), motorcycles were the leading cause of traffic fatalities in the country between 2022 and February 2025, with 4,321 deaths recorded.

Motorcycles are the leading form of transport used in the Dominican Republic. There are more than 3 million motorcycles registered but estimates indicate that two or three times that amount are circulating without registration.

Motorcyclists are notorious for breaking traffic laws with the authorities looking the other way.

Thousands of motorcycles are used for delivery services, a business that has boomed given the traffic jams.

Diario Libre reports that motorcycle taxiing has become a way of living for many. An editorial in Diario Libre comments on the high cost of the boom in motorcycles in circulation. The editorial mentions that the president of the Association of Concessionaires and Manufacturers of Motorcycles, Darío Lama, says the DR imported US$170 million in motorcycles in 2024, paying US$97 million in taxes. At the same time, motorcycles are involved in 70% of all traffic accidents and in 90% of fatal traffic accidents.
