The generous deal for politicians, political parties get RD$375 million in first quarter

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) disbursed over RD$375 million to political parties and movements in the Dominican Republic between January and March 2025, adhering to the state funding authorized by Law 33-18.

According to a report from the JCE’s Specialized Financial Control of Political Parties, 38 parties and political movements that gained legal recognition following the 2024 elections received these funds.

The JCE report details that the three major parties, which garnered over 5% of the valid votes in the 2024 election, have already received a combined total of RD$300 million for January, February, and March 2025. The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), and the People’s Force (Fuerza del Pueblo) are the primary beneficiaries, having surpassed the 5% threshold in the most recent electoral contest.

Law 33-18 on Political Parties, Groups, and Movements stipulates that parties securing more than 5% of the vote are entitled to 80% of the total annual funds allocated to political organizations.

An additional seven parties received a total of RD$45 million in the first quarter of the year for obtaining between 1% and 5% of the valid votes in the elections. These parties include the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), Democratic Hope (PED), National Unity (PUN), the Institutional Social Democratic Bloc (BIS), Dominicans for Change, and Social Justice. These organizations are eligible to receive 12% of the total budgeted resources for political entities, as outlined in the party law.

The report also indicates that 23 minority parties, which secured between 0.01% and 1% of the valid votes in the last elections, have collectively received RD$30 million for the first three months of 2025. This group, the majority within the electoral system, is entitled to 8% of the total resources allocated to political organizations by law.

The substantial sum for minority organizations was distributed among parties such as Possible Country, Democratic Option, Country Alliance, Broad Front, Liberal Action, Dominican Green Party, Citizen Will, National Progressive Force, Generation of Servants, and Civic Renewal, among others. Notably, the Generation of Servants party has stated that it has renounced these funds.

In a separate category, five political movements that participated in the municipal elections of February 2024 but not in the presidential and congressional elections of May of the same year each received RD$13,740, according to the JCE report. These movements are Independent Unity and Progress, Political Eagle, Nosotros pa’ Cuando, Independent Humanist, and Civic Cabrereño.
