
Visiting King Felipe VI of Spain and President Luis Abinader joined National District Mayor Carolina Mejía to inaugurate a monument celebrating peace and freedom on the Km 7 of the Malecón promenade on 6 May 2025. The sculpture “Flame” by Carlos Albert represents the Rainer Arnold Award created by the World Jurist Association and the World Law Foundation to recognize excellence in the constitutional investigation in the legal realm. King Felipe is visiting to participate in the closing events of the World Law Congress and other official activities.
The monument, titled “Peace and Freedom,” stands as a symbol of the historical ties between Spain and the Dominican Republic, highlighting shared values of democracy and human rights. During the ceremony, President Abinader emphasized the importance of remembrance and the promotion of peace, stating: “[This monument] reminds us of our commitment to build a future based on freedom, justice, and respect for all.”
King Felipe VI expressed his appreciation for the tribute, underscoring the enduring friendship between the two nations. “This monument will serve as a constant reminder of the importance of dialogue, understanding, and cooperation in achieving lasting peace,” he said.
