President Abinader and King Felipe VI open new university in La Romana

President Luis Abinader and Spain’s King Felipe VI inaugurated the first phase of the Universidad La Romana (Uniromana) on Tuesday, 6 May 2025. The new institution, promoted by the Fundación Universitaria Iberoamericana (Funiber), is set to begin classes in September.

During the ceremony, Funiber president Santos Gracia Villar emphasized their commitment to accessibility, stating that “no one should have to give up studying for economic reasons.” He highlighted Funiber’s presence in 30 countries across several continents, with its headquarters in Barcelona, Spain.

Franklin García Fermín, Dominican Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Mescyt), explained that Uniromana aims for academic excellence and provides students the opportunity to begin their studies in the Dominican Republic and finish in Spain. This vision, he said, transcends borders, integrates knowledge, and connects cultures.

Uniromana will offer undergraduate and graduate programs designed to meet workforce demands and promote professional growth. A dual international degree program, in partnership with the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (Uneatlántico) in Spain, will significantly enhance graduates’ academic and career opportunities.

Expected to welcome its first students in September, Uniromana initially aims to enroll over 500 students, both in-person and online, with plans for further expansion. Its virtual platform showcases a range of degree options tailored to student interests.

The first phase of Uniromana includes technological classrooms, laboratories, and scientific development spaces housed in modern facilities. This marks the beginning of an ambitious expansion plan projected to benefit thousands of Dominican and international students through diverse career paths aligned with workforce needs.

The inauguration was attended by representatives from Uniromana, business leaders, educators, diplomats, government officials, and local authorities, alongside President Abinader and King Felipe VI.
