President Luis Abinader and Spain’s King Felipe VI closed the 2025 World Law Congress on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, an event that brought together dozens of legal experts from around the world to discuss growing threats to fundamental freedoms and human rights amidst the rise of authoritarian regimes, Noticias SIN reports.

In his address, President Abinader emphasized the country’s significant reforms to establish an independent, modern, and transparent justice system, grounded in institutional collaboration, gender equity, and human dignity. However, he cautioned that substantial challenges remain, including the fight against corruption and safeguarding liberties.

King Felipe VI reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law, stressing that a robust political model is one where equality before the law is respected. He also extended condolences to the Dominican people following the tragic Jet Set incident.

David E. Kovel, legal counselor for the Association, stated that judges and magistrates are the backbone of the judicial system, and their work, rooted in principles and service, can transform the world and restore dignity to its people.

Holta Zaçaj, president of Albania’s Constitutional Court, warned that justice cannot be taken for granted, especially in uncertain times. She reminded attendees that defending the rule of law is a battle each generation must fight.

Noticias SIN reported that a notable moment during the closing ceremony was the embrace between President Abinader and former President Leonel Fernández, who shared a brief conversation. Fernandez leads the Fuerza del Pueblo, that has replaced the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) as the political party receiving the second most votes in the 2024 presidential election.

During the ceremony at the UASD’s Great Hall, several legal professionals were recognized for their outstanding contributions to justice, legality, and human rights defense internationally.

Participants emphasized that the congress underscored the imperative to continue fighting for freedoms and fortifying democratic institutions against any authoritarian regression attempts.
