The visit of Abinader to Washington follows on the heels of the recent meeting of Dominican ministers of Hacienda, Foreign Relations and Industry and Commerce with US Trade Representative officials regarding a 10% tariff on Dominican exports. Likewise, recently Dominican movie exports were levied a 100% tax.

Moreso, the visit follows recent statements by US ambassador nominee Leah Campos that reducing Chinese influence in the Dominican Republic will be one of the priorities if confirmed to the position. Since 9 April 2025, the Dominican Republic has a new ambassador in lawyer Maria Isabel Castillo Baez.
