Food costs increase slightly in first third of 2025

During the first four months of 2025, the cost of the basic food basket increased slightly across the different wage segments. The average cost of food was pegged at RD$46,728 overall in April. This represented a 0.66% increase since January.

For the lowest income quintile, the cost was set at RD$27,828.58 in January, and this went up to RD$27,968.34 in April, an increase of just 0.50%.

It should be noted that the minimum wage for workers varies according to the size of the company, with large companies paying nearly RD$28,000 and the very smallest companies paying a bit over RD$15,000.

According to the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, the year-to-year inflation rate has been 3.71% and within the 4.0%+/-1% since late in 2023. According to the results of a national survey in 2018, a bit over 70% of household incomes is the result of economic activities carried out by members of the household. Nearly 20% comes from remittances and other money transfers, and the rest from passive income from rentals and such.
