The Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex) reported that the First Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Minister of Kenya, Musalia Mudavadi, arrived on 9 May 2025 to Santo Domingo for talks with Dominican government officials. The visit is after he met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, DC on 7 May.

Mudavadi will meet with Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez to discuss bilateral issues. Following these meetings, on Tuesday, 13 May 2025 the Kenyan minister is scheduled to meet with President Luis Abinader.

Minister Mudavadi will also meet with Minister of Defense Carlos Antonio Fernandez Onofre. This is especially important given the fact that Kenya has over a thousand troops in neighboring Haiti, where the situation has been going downhill. There will be additional meetings with the Dominican ministers of Health and Commerce.

President Luis Abinader has scheduled a meeting with former Presidents of the Republic, Danilo Medina, Leonel Fernandez and Hipolito Mejia for 14 May 2025 at the Ministry of Defense to discuss the country’s position and actions given the continued crisis in Haiti.

Reports are that the Kenyan government seeks more Dominican support to the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti.

“In Santo Domingo, Mudavadi will sign MOUs on medical evacuation, repatriation of wounded, and deceased persons, access to Dominican territory for Kenyan members of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti,” said Mudavadi’s office in a brief sent to newsrooms.

The meetings in Santo Domingo are a follow-up of meetings held by President Luis Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez in Washington, D. C. with US Secretary Marco Rubio. That meeting also coincided with Rubio’s meeting with Mudavadi in Washington, D.C. Rubio has announced plans to visit Kenya.

The Dominican government for decades has been calling for proactive efforts to revert the multidimensional crisis in Haiti at times when the world seems to the Dominican Republic to deal with the pressures of Haitian migration, at a heavy burden in security and social costs. The DR seeks a permanent solution in Haiti to the Haitian multidimensional crisis.
