Presidency awards Unesco prize to Alicia Ortega

President Luis Abinader took advantage of the weekly Monday press conference on 12 May 2025 to announce that investigative journalist and lead editor of the Noticias SIN news service, Alicia Ortega is the 2025 choice of the Dominican Journalist and Unesco Award. The award was received by her daughter, journalist Jessica Hasbun.

The award was created in 2021 and is funded by the government’s Banco de Reservas. The Presidency did not announce the amount of the cash award.

The winner is chosen by the permanent delegation of the Dominican Republic to the Unesco with the participation of the Colegio Dominicano de Periodistas, the local journalism guild.

The award is announced on the occasion of the celebration of the World Freedom of the Press Day by the Unesco (3 May 2025), with the backing of the Ministry of Foreign Relations. Previous winners Jose Bujosa Mieses (2021), Ercilio Veloz Burgos (2022), Ramon Colombo (2023) and Eulalio Almonte (2024).

Larissa Veloz, permanent delegate to the Unesco, announced that Alicia Ortega is the first woman to receive the award.
