President Luis Abinader clarified during his weekly Monday press conference on 12 May 2025 that the meeting on 14 May 2025 at the Ministry of Defense with three former Dominican Presidents is about security. “We are not going to discuss immigration policies,” he clarified.
Former Presidents Danilo Medina (2012-2016, 2016-2020), Leonel Fernandez (1996-2000, 2004-2008, 2008-2012) and Hipolito Mejia (2000-2004) have been convened to discuss the Haiti issue given the scant advances in resolving the multidimensional crisis in Haiti and the impact of the situation on the Dominican Republic.
He said: “We will convene the Social Economic Council (CES) to discuss the best policies.” He said during the 14 May meeting he would share “information that I want them to hear and be aware of both of the present situation in Haiti and the gangs, the actions the international community the few actions has taken, and information on the Ministry of Foreign Relations of actions the different governments and panoramic of the Dominican Republic. We are not going to discuss policies. It is merely sharing of information and focused on the issue of security.“
He stressed the government will convene to the Social Economic Council (CES) to discuss the topics according to the benefits and the best actions in favor of our country.
“Basically, the Wednesday meeting is to share information and the meetings will be held in the CES,” he stressed.
He added: “I will visit them individually the former presidents and their political parties [Partido de la Liberacion Dominicana (PLD) and Fuerza del Pueblo (FP)] because the two are also presidents of the opposition parties. So that with that information they can meet with their advisors and then make their recommendations.”
The goal is to have a unified general vision of the Haitian issue,” he highlighted.
The meeting comes at a time Barbecue (Jimmy Cherizier), the feared Haitian gang leader, has shared a video where he threatens the Dominican Republic.
