Bahamas’ foreign minister to visit this week

Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell / Commonwealth of the Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex) announced that Frederick Mitchell, the Foreign Minister of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, will pay an official visit from 14 to 17 May 2025.

According to a statement released by Mirex, Mitchell’s official itinerary begins on Thursday, 15 May when he will be received by his Dominican counterpart, Roberto Alvarez, at the Ministry of Foreign Relations in Santo Domingo. The ministers are expected to discuss bilateral issues and explore potential areas of economic cooperation during their meeting.

The Bahamian foreign minister’s presence is seen as an opportunity to strengthen economic ties. The focus will be on sectors where both nations can complement each other, fostering dialogue to identify trade opportunities, promote business connections, and enhance the presence of Dominican products in the Bahamian market. This aligns with the Dominican Republic’s foreign policy goals of promoting commerce and investment.

In addition to his official engagements, Mitchell is scheduled to meet privately with Dominican businessmen and producers. He is expected to return to The Bahamas on Saturday, 17 May.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations in its note on the visit emphasized that Minister Mitchell’s visit marks the fourth time this year that the Dominican Republic has hosted a foreign minister, underscoring the country’s regional leadership and its recognition as a stable democracy with a strong legal framework and institutional strength.

President Luis Abinader visited The Bahamas in June 2023.

The visit of the Bahamas foreign minister comes at a time when international funding has not been available to step up actions in Haiti to combat the violent gangs that continue to control the capital city of that country.

The Bahamas has sent a contingent of six soldiers to the multinational security support mission in Haiti. Kenyan forces (615 men) complain these soldiers are not participating in frontline operations.

In recent years, The Bahamas has implemented stringent measures to deter migrants, including the introduction of new immigration laws and increased security at its borders.
