More arts high schools by 2028

Minister of Education Luis Miguel de Camps announced plans to double the number of high schools offering arts programs within the next three years.

Speaking on 13 May 2025 at the opening ceremony of the 12th National Arts Gala at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, De Camps said the Ministry of Education aims to reach a 15% coverage rate in the country’s technical high schools by 2028.

“From the Ministry of Education, we are committed to achieving this goal, convinced that the talent of our people cannot be left without a stage, workshop, or classroom,” he stated.

Currently, around 14,000 students in 86 centers across the country’s 18 educational regions receive artistic training in fields such as music, dance, theater, film, photography, multimedia, visual arts, and crafts.

De Camps emphasized that the artistic expressions showcased at the gala are a result of public policy recognizing the importance of incorporating beauty, creativity, and artistic expression as essential components of comprehensive education.

Gelson Navarro, coordinator of the arts program, explained that the National Gala primarily aims to highlight the artistic skills acquired by students in the public education system.

The “Arts Without Borders” National Gala continues at the Palacio de Bellas Artes on 14 and 15 May from 8am to 4pm with a diverse artistic program including musical performances, theater productions, audiovisual presentations, painting exhibitions, ceramics, jewelry, and woodworking pieces, among others.
