20 new renewable projects accelerate energy transformation

The Dominican Republic is significantly advancing its energy transformation with 20 renewable energy projects currently in development. These will add 1,006 megawatts (MW) to the national energy grid.

This announcement was made by Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos during his address at the business breakfast organized by the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic (Camacoesrd), titled “Government Perspective on the Growth and Integration of Renewable Energies in the Dominican Republic’s Generation Sector.”

Minister Santos detailed the nation’s progress in expanding its energy supply, diversifying its energy sources, and strengthening its transmission system, while also highlighting the improvements in efficiency. He underscored the critical role of international cooperation in the development of the Dominican Republic’s energy sector.

Santos further noted that the Dominican Republic offers favorable conditions for foreign investors. “Here, getting permissions is much more agile, land is more readily available.

The Minister explained that these advancements align with the government’s strategy of strengthening natural gas utilization, promoting renewable energies, and implementing the Zero Bureaucracy program, an initiative aimed at simplifying government procedures across all sectors of the national economy.

Minister Santos expressed his gratitude to the Spanish Chamber of Commerce for the invitation and reiterated the Ministry of Energy and Mines’ commitment to continued collaboration.

Francisco “Paco” Pérez, president of the Chamber, explained that the conference aimed to provide a platform for key government authorities in the electricity sector to share up-to-date information and address concerns from various stakeholders, particularly Spanish companies affiliated with the Chamber.

“Fostering a culture of care for the climate and the planet should be a priority for everyone involved in this issue,” Pérez stated. “That is why, from the Chamber, we offer our partners and the business sector these meetings, which allow us to discuss such crucial topics as the government’s perspective on the growth and integration of renewable energies in the Dominican Republic’s generation sector.”

The event was also attended by Vice Minister of Innovation and Energy Transition, Betty Soto; the executive director of the National Energy Commission, Edward Veras; the general administrator of the Dominican Electricity Transmission Company, Martín Robles; the manager of the Coordinating Body of the Electrical System, Manuel López San Pablo; and Pedro Valdez of Acciona Energía, who served as the event’s moderator.
