Octavio Dotel’s widow files legal actions against Jet Set owners following deadly nightclub collapse

The legal fallout continues following the tragic collapse of the Jet Set nightclub on 8 April 2025 that resulted in 235 deaths, including merengue singer Rubby Pérez, and over 180 injuries. The number of legal actions against the club’s owners has now reached 41 placed in the Dominican Republic and in the United States.

Among the latest to file legal action is Massiel Javier Almonte, the wife of former Major League Baseball player Octavio Dotel. Her complaint was placed with the National District Prosecutor’s Office that is investigating the case and has yet to release the expert opinion on what caused the collapse of the roof.

The legal actions target Antonio Espaillat López, his mother Ana Grecia López, and their company, Inversiones E y L.

Families of the deceased and injured are seeking millions in compensation and are urging prosecutors to seek preventative detention for the club owners. Some lawsuits also name the Dominican state and the National District municipality, alleging negligence in safety oversight.

The roof of the popular Jet Set nightclub collapsed at 12:44am on 8 April during a traditional Monday night event when Rubby Perez was performing, plunging the nation into mourning.
