More details on the Colonial City makeover

The government’s program to develop the Colonial City of the National District will take a big step forward as it undertakes the refurbishment of over 140 houses in the area. The new areas to undergo renovations include the nearby barrios such as San Lazaro, Santa Barbara, and San Anton. Additional financing for the ambitious project will come from the European Union.

An extension of this initiative, the government’s program to support the smallest of businesses will recondition some 20 small businesses in the area to make them more appealing to tourists.

The “Paint Your City” program, financed by the InterAmerican Development Bank is yet another component in the overall plan to make the Colonial City as attractive as possible. The program enables the use of multiple colors, in contrast with the previous white or ochre colors.

Among the steps to be taken are new stone pavement, wider sidewalks, underground cables for electricity, new water pipes, improved sanitation, and better signage.
