A controversy between the Minister of Environment Paino Henriquez and La Vega senator Rogelio Genao brings to the front the importance of the seasonal ban on crab consumption.
After Genao uploaded to his social media a video showing him eating crab meat, he received a note from the Ministry of Environment asking him to rectify and remind people that crab meat consumption is banned until 30 June.
Genao would argue he received the crab meat as a gift from a friend and it was an imported product. He said that Henriquez could take him to court to prove his fault.
The seasonal ban from 1 March to 30 June is obligatory as it enables the species to multiply.
