Young couple’s fertility quest results in quadruplets in Santiago

Darianny Mercedes Acosta and Maicol Rafael López, residents of Río Seco in La Vega, welcomed quadruplets – three girls and a boy – at the Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) on Friday, 23 May 2025.

After years of struggling with infertility and undergoing various treatments to conceive, Acosta, 27, delivered the healthy quadruplets prematurely. The infants, named Maia, Mailin, Mailen, and Maicol David, remain in incubators but are doing well.

“It’s a gift from God,” the couple described their unexpected bundle of joy. They have been together for several years and married for three. The parents said they previously worked at the free trade zone in La Vega but had to stop due to the pregnancy.

While overjoyed at becoming first-time parents, the couple acknowledges the challenges ahead. They live in a rented two-bedroom house and will need significant support to care for their growing family. The HOMS Foundation has been instrumental in assisting them so far.

“It’s an emotion I can’t explain; it’s truly beautiful,” said Acosta, expressing her initial concerns but finding solace in the healthy birth of her children. “I’m asking God for the strength to care for all four of them.”

Acosta described her pregnancy as a difficult yet wonderful journey, given her health complications and the eventual safe delivery. Initially shocked at the news of expecting quadruplets, she found support in her husband, who handled the news better than she did.

Since the pregnancy, Acosta said she has received invaluable help from her mother, Marta Adames, and López’s family. Despite being a man of few words, López’s joy at becoming a father to four is evident as tears well up in his eyes. The couple is grateful for the support they’ve received but appeals for continued assistance as they navigate this unexpected yet blessed chapter in their lives.
