A feature in N Digital by Raul German Batista blasts those who enjoy the bounties of the Caribbean Sea-bordering maritime boardwalk, but leave behind litter. The journalist reports that the city government spent US$50 million to build the Paseo Maritimo Malecon, spanning 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) along the Caribbean Sea as a vibrant public space for recreation and tourism. Yet, the scenic waterfront is continuously impacted by litter left behind by the nighttime visitors.
As things stand, while intended as a gathering place for outdoor activities and a catalyst for urban renewal, the Malecón now grapples with this serious problem of accumulated trash, primarily due to carelessness from those enjoying the nightlife, especially on weekends.
German reports that the absence of clear guidelines for Malecón users has led to the formation of small garbage piles just meters from the pristine Caribbean Sea. These detract from the scenic beauty and also pose a direct threat to the marine ecosystem. Wind and rain can easily carry the debris into the ocean, causing significant environmental harm.
He calls for urgent action and effective measures to prevent litter accumulation and preserve the Malecón as a clean and enjoyable public space. Pedestrians are calling for increased patrols, environmental education, and consistent cleaning operations.
