On the occasion of the anniversary of the assassination of the 1961 Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo on 30 May, local media are reminding the Dominican people of who Trujillo was and the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives to remove the ruthless dictator.
Among the media presentations, journalist Camila Garcia for her “Para contarlo” interview on Color Vision Channel 9, on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, gathered several of the relatives of the 21 involved in the assassination plot.
The heart-breaking words of the relatives tell of the major sacrifices of the victims of those who were motivated by the murder of the Mirabal sisters to give their lives and risk those of their families and friends to put an end to the cruel regime.
The relatives called for a strengthening of Dominican institutions, more education and for an increased awareness of history among the population.
They alerted of the dangers that the new generation today seems to rely on social media for news and history lessons. Those interviewed expressed their concern on the ignorance of the people in the Dominican Republic as to what happened during the 30-year dictatorship and the lessons to be learned.
